While I know you all appreciate the inordinate amount of time teachers are devoting to Remote Learning, I have asked them to “unplug” for this weekend in order to decompress and enjoy this holiday weekend with their families.  As a result, if you send an email over the weekend, it may not be addressed until Monday.  Thank you for understanding!

Yearbook Cover Contest Winners

Congratulations to this year’s Yearbook Cover Contest winners:  Hannah Laramie (front cover) and Cate Sheibley (back cover).  We have some very talented artists in fourth grade this year, so it was a difficult choice!  These two talented winners will receive a Target gift card. 

Report Cards

Quarter 3 report cards were released on PowerSchool at 2:30 PM today.  To access your child's report card online, log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal and you will see a Report Cards icon in the left hand pane.  When you click on this icon, your child's report card will appear on the screen.  You can scroll to see the entire report card and choose to print it, if you'd like. 

Integrated Arts (Grades 1-4)

Please remember that Integrated Arts classes (art, library, music and physical education) are required classes (and are graded in grades in grades 3 & 4).  Students need to be checking in for attendance on their “special days” and participating in the lessons/assignments.  If you have any questions, please contact the teacher(s) directly.

Remote Learning Plan

I wanted to follow up on Assistant Superintendent Laliberte’s letter to parents from last Friday.  Understanding that we cannot replicate the same education that would have happened if there had not been a COVID-19 pandemic, we are making an adjustment to our weekly schedule.  As a school, we are constantly looking for the best ways to support all students.  We believe that utilizing a model that lends itself to greater flexibility will be beneficial for our school community.  Starting next week, we will dedicate Wednesday to support the personalization of learning.  Please note, this is not a day off for students as they are expected to participate in their learning.  Instead of receiving direct whole-class instruction, Wednesday is a day that may include targeted instructional opportunities and/or allow for more student choice and enrichment.  We are hopeful that this change to the remote learning schedule will assist in giving students a little less screen time and a little more flexibility in their learning.  

Parent Questionnaires

The results from our weekly questionnaires help teachers to calibrate their lesson planning each week.  We greatly appreciate parents/guardians continuing to fill them out for each of their children.

Placement

Even though we are working remotely, we are starting to think about placement for 2020/21.  Please read THIS LETTER, which outlines the process.

Breakfast and Lunch – April Vacation

BSD will continue to offer breakfast and lunch to students during April Vacation (4/27-5/1).  Please continue to fill out the Food Service Meal Order Form (HERE).  Deadline for pre-ordering is 2pm the previous day.  Please know that  pre-ordering is a must in order to ensure you have meals. 

Geskus (Free Gift)

As a means of sharing some happiness during this challenging time, Geskus Studios (district Photographer) is offering a free gift to families.  They sent emails out this week to those parents for whom they have contact details.  This email provides a complimentary digital download of your child’s fall portrait featured on any of 6 new spring style backgrounds.  There is absolutely nothing to purchase and this is entirely free for any family to enjoy.

Families will receive an email with a personalized security code allowing you to download an image.  You can share these with a loved one for an Easter or Passover greeting, surprise Mom or Dad with a photo for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, or share a spring-time “hello” on social media.

The Yearbook Needs Your Photos! UPDATED INFORMATION

We are adding remote learning pages to the yearbook this year!  If you would like to contribute, send a photo of your student(s) to jen.spector@gmail.com.  Please include your student's grade and teacher.  We are collecting photos of individual students, and also photos of siblings working or playing together!  These photos can be creative - they do not have to be of your students working on their Chromebook.  Anything fun students have enjoyed while being home over these past few weeks will work.  Please send these photos before April 17^th.  Thank you!!

Mindfulness

Help yourself to be mindful, attentive, and calm by focusing on your breathing.

Place one hand close to your nose (not touching) and one hand on your belly.  As you breathe in, feel your belly expand.  As you exhale, feel the warm air hit your hand.  Focus on this breath for one minute.  It's OK when thoughts sometimes come into the mind uninvited.  Try to exhale that thought away.

Destination Imagination Fundraiser

Spring cleaning?  Please donate all of your old paired shoes/boots for our annual DI Fundraiser (no cleats or flip flops, please).  Please write “Shoe Fundraiser” with a sharpie on the bag or on a tag/piece of paper and tape it to the bag.  All clothing can be donated as well—no need to mark.  Please do not overfill the bags as the slot cannot take a stuffed bag.  BINS are located in all of the schools' parking lots.  Please contact our DI Coordinator (Marie Russell) via email if you ever find one that is full.  Thank you very much! bedfordrocksdi@gmail.com

Google Meet Expectations

As we continue to progress with the newness of remote learning, it is helpful to stay in contact and keep communication open. Google Meet allows educators and students to meet live with a whole-class, in small groups, and in one-to-one meetings. Please find the Google Meet Expectations in the link.

We strive to provide the best possible education and support for our students, while maintaining the privacy within each home. We are respectfully requesting that, if possible, when your child meets in small groups or one-to-one with an educator, that those meetings take place in a public part of your home. We thank you for your consideration as we continue to support students in productive learning environments.

Remote Learning Schedule Update

Assistant Superintendent Laliberte sent a letter today to staff and families outlining an update to our Remote Learning schedule and process.  If you haven’t yet seen it, you can access it HERE.

Parent Questionnaire

Your child’s teacher(s) sent out the weekly Parent Questionnaire in today’s communication.  Teachers are using the results to help calibrate and plan their weekly lessons.  Please fill it out for EACH of your children.  Thank you!

Mickey Spain Facebook Live Concert

Each year on the day before Spring Vacation, Mickey Spain and his band provide a fun and engaging concert for our students.  Ask your child about it!  Since he’s not able to visit schools this spring, he is offering a concert via Facebook Live on Sunday, April 5^th at noon.  He promises plenty of singing, dancing and fun!  Tune in with your children, if you’re able!  You can search Mickey Spain Music on Facebook to find it.

Mindfulness

Just like anything you want to learn, Mindfulness takes practice.  Try this Mindfulness exercise for one minute at the beginning of every day.  Sit tall in a chair with quiet hands in your lap.  Have your eyes look at one point in the room.  Have your ears be listening.  Your mouth should be quiet.  Can you keep your whole body calm; not moving, wiggling, or talking for one minute?  If you practice every day, you will be able to have a mindful body.

Happy Friday to all!  I want to thank all of our families who are working with us through this “temporary normal” of Remote Learning.  We realize how trying this is, and we appreciate the patience, flexibility, grace and positivity that you are providing our teachers.  As you know, they are working very hard to make this work for their students as best as possible.  Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and relaxing weekend!

Governor Sununu has extended Remote Learning through May 3^rd.  For the BSD that means that we will be extended through Friday, April 24^th as our Spring Vacation is April 27-May 1.

Parent Questionnaire

In order to calibrate and plan their weekly lessons, teachers will be sending out a very quick questionnaire to parents each Friday.  It is very important that you complete it each week.  It will be turned off every Sunday night at 6:00 PM.  Thank you!

Google Hangout/Meet

As you know, permission was requested this week for students to be able to participate in Google Hangouts/Meet with their teachers starting on Monday.  If you have not filled out the form yet, please do so HERE.  Google Meet is a video conferencing tool that allows teachers to create synchronous video classrooms to meet with their students for face-to-face interactions.  This is an optional tool for teachers to use if/when they feel it would be beneficial to students’ instruction.  If a teacher chooses to use this tool with their class or a group of students, he/she will only be using it with students for whom parent/guardian permission was granted.  If you have any questions about it, please contact your child’s teacher.

As we move forward with remote learning, it's normal to feel a bit stressed and overwhelmed.  You may have difficulty focusing your attention with so many things going on and your child(ren) may be feeling the same way.  There is research to support that Mindfulness can reduce stress and help focus attention.  To that end, I will be sharing a Mindfulness Message/Practice each Friday for you to do with your child(ren) the following week. You might want to start your family's school and work day with these Mindfulness Practices keeping in mind that:

Thank you for taking the time to read this guide. It contains the big ideas regarding our implementation of remote instruction at Riddle Brook School. Please think of this as a mini-addendum to our regular school handbook.

Staff members have been working hard all week to plan and prepare for Remote Learning for our students, which will begin on Monday (3/23). Please be looking for communication from your child’s teacher each day.

We will be in touch regularly as well with information and updates. As always, please feel free to reach out to us with questions, concerns and information. We’re here to support parents/guardians and students during this transition to Remote Learning. We all recognize that this is a very stressful time for families as we are adjusting to a very different work, school and family life. Please know that RBS is here for you if you need support!

Goal of Remote Instruction:
The central goal of remote instruction is to continue student learning. Students will continue to be given instructional opportunities and demonstrate competency in a variety of ways.

Preparation for Remote Instruction:
Staff members have spent this past week preparing for remote learning. Through extensive work as teams, individuals, and in coordination with our Digital Learning Specialist (Debbie Rodd), teachers have prepared a number of lessons and resources to ensure a continuity of programs.

Access to Riddle Brook:
At this point, we are asking that no students or parents enter our building. We are doing our best to keep the building disinfected and mitigate any chance of infection/contamination of those staff members that need to be in the building.

If you need anything from the building, please call the main office to ask about if/how/when you can pick up the item.

Communication:
For teachers, email will be the primary mode of communication. If you need to reach a teacher, counselor, or other staff member, please use email. Staff members are available to answer emails throughout the typical school hours. Emails that come in after the end of the school day may not be returned until the next school day. Main office and health office staff are available by phone or email to answer questions throughout the day. If someone does not answer your call, please leave a message and someone will get back to you. STAFF DIRECTORY

Parent/Teacher Conferences:
• Quarter 3 closes on March 27th.
• Teachers will be in touch about how parents want to handle Parent/Teacher Conferences (i.e. phone or email).

Class Expectations:
All students are expected to participate in the online activities that their teachers prepare for them.

During this period of remote instruction, it will be important to maintain as much normalcy as possible for our students. We understand that homes are now strategizing how to have multiple students, and in many cases parents, working remotely from home. Please use some flexibility during your day, but note that most assignments will be due the date they are assigned, unless otherwise specified by the teacher.

Teachers will make themselves available via email to parents for academic questions throughout the time of a typical school day.

We have asked teachers to reduce the scope of the curriculum and instruction in order to adjust to a remote learning model. We cannot cover all the same material as we would have in a physical classroom setting.

Playground Access:
Given the guidance from the CDC and DHHS about stopping the transmission of the COVID-19 virus, we are asking that students DO NOT come to our playgrounds.

Tech Support (UPDATE):

• Chromebooks were distributed this week. Thank you to families for helping to make this distribution seamless!
• If you need tech support during the Remote Learning period, please contact the IT department through this form. They will try to arrange for a drop-off to McKelvie School, so they can fix the Chromebook if it is broken or they will call you back to help resolve the issue. Our technology staff can also be reached at (603) 310-9559. 
• An additional Chromebook pickup time has been added for grades 1-6 for families who need a device for their child. 
• Date: Monday March 23rd 
• Times: 9:00 am-10:30 am or 2:00 pm-3:30 pm 
• Location: McKelvie School - Please come around to the back of the school for pickup. 

Attendance:
Teachers will be taking attendance each morning. Each teacher will communicate to their parents/guardians how attendance will be taken.

Even if your child will not be able to get to their work assignments until later in the day, please take a minute in the morning to let the teacher know that your child is “present” that day.

If your child is sick and unable to attend Remote Learning for that day, please call into our Attendance Line (471-1082 x1) just as you normally would do.

Guidance Help:
During these times when all adults are less certain about how things are going to proceed, it’s ever more important to create normal structures for our students.

Students thrive on structure, clear expectations, and a sense of normalcy. It's important for all of us to create an environment that mirrors the four walls of a school building as much as possible.

Take some time with your student to think about things that they do every day at school that impact their well-being as a student: scheduled and as-needed breaks (this includes breaks from all technology), household chores and regular exercise, quiet time, and a time and appropriate method to check in with friends. You may also want to consider helping your student connect with their regular supports from the building (classroom teachers, specialists, integrated arts teachers, counselor, nurse or principal).

Taking on the task of organizing your child’s day can be overwhelming. We suggest that you empower your student to chunk out their time in manageable increments and set daily goals. This will help in making your household schedule flow.

School Nurse:

• Our school nurse, Michele Ouellette, will be available during the school day as a resource to parents and staff. Parents should report any influenza-like-illness (ILI) or positive test results for any type of flu including influenza A, B or COVID-19 to the health office. Special Services:
In general, these services will be provided following these guidelines:

• Special Education: Special education staff will continue to offer services based on the individual needs of students. Service delivery may include remote learning, instructional work packets, instructional telephone calls with students, consults to caregivers, and other curriculum-based instructional activities and resources. If you have specific questions or concerns regarding your child’s needs, please communicate directly with your child’s case manager or the special education facilitator.

• Section 504 Plans: Classroom teachers will continue to follow student Section 504 plans as they typically would in the physical classroom. However, it is important for all students and teachers to be flexible in their approach and methods during this period of time

Breakfast and Lunch (UPDATE):

• Pick up for the grab and go breakfasts and lunches will now be at the BHS gym door entrance (instead of front entrance). Those doors are nearer the kitchen and make the logistics of delivery easier. If you’ve never been to that entrance, it’s at the back of the building. A sign will be along the sidewalk as it has been this week.
• Please continue to fill out the Food Service Meal Order Form (HERE).
• Deadline for pre-ordering is 2pm the previous day. Please know that pre-ordering is a must in order to ensure you have meals. 
• Contact Emily Murphy at murphye@bedfordnhk12.net for any questions or concerns. 
• For additional meal and food support, the Bedford Community Food Pantry has extended their hours from 9am-12pm. Click HERE for more information.

Other School Activities:

• All school and district events scheduled to take place between now and April vacation are cancelled. That includes Family Fun Night and the 4th Grade Play.
• Although Grandparents’ Day was scheduled to take place after April Vacation, it is cancelled as well.
• Yearbook orders are now on hold. More information to come.

Academic Integrity:
During this time, students may not be present in the physical classroom, but it is vital to maintain academic honesty and integrity in the educational environment. It is important that all student work is a true reflection of a student’s ability and progress toward competency and we would encourage students to work independently or collaboratively as appropriate for a particular subject or assignment.

IN THE NEWS:

Covid-19 Update

At RBS, we are continuing to be vigilant about using precautionary measures in our classrooms and school community.  Please see the specific information from last week’s note HERE.  As you saw from Superintendent Fournier’s note to parents yesterday, “All school events/trips between today and April vacation will be either postponed/modified or cancelled.  Each school will communicate the specifics in their notes THIS FRIDAY.”  The list for RBS is: 

• Family Fun Night will be revised.  Please click HERE for more information. 
• 4^th Grade Play:  We will not offer a performance in front of an audience.  It will either be recorded or streamed.  More information to come.
• Grandparents’ Day is cancelled.
• Field trips are cancelled.
• We will make a decision on events that are scheduled after April Vacation at a later date.

In addition, staff members are currently working on ways in which we can provide students with tele-schooling in the event that we need to shut down the school for any length of time.  At this point, there are no plans to do that, but we want to be as prepared as possible if it happens.  As a school community, we are remaining calm and measured as we want to provide our students with as much consistency and normalcy as we can.  At the same time, school and district administrators are working/consulting with one another, other NH school districts, and community and state health and education leaders in order to make decisions.  I can assure you that this is at the forefront of our minds at all times.  We appreciate your support, feedback and partnership. 

RBS KidVote Results

RBS had students vote in our annual KidVote, which supported our Town/District voting on March 10^th.  The winner of the vote (with 74%) was Gilley (my dog) dressing as Baby Shark and visiting classrooms.  I’m looking forward to bring her around to visit all of the students!

Coin Drive (Part of Book Fair)

March 30th-April 2nd All For Books Coin Drive! All money raised by the coin drive goes directly to the teachers to buy books for their classrooms!  Scholastic also matches all our funds raised and donates to different Youth Literacy Charities. Please start saving those coins!  Each day that week we will collect a different denomination!

2020 Riddle Brook Yearbooks are On Sale Now

Online ordering is now available at www.SchoolAnnual.com. Click "Buy Student's Yearbook" in the upper right hand corner and enter Riddle Brook School. Yearbooks are $20.00. Envelopes will be coming home with the students in the near future for those that would prefer to order by cash or check. Online ordering will be available until April 3^rd.

BHS UNICEF Club Water Walk

Over 800 children die every day due to unsafe drinking water.  That’s almost 1 every 2 minutes.  In order to help bring awareness and solve this problem, the Bedford High School UNICEF Club is hosting a Water Walk on March 21^st at 1pm at Bedford High School.  There will be fun, interactive stations along the 2-mile route.  You can register for free at www.is.gd/waterwalk. Bring your family and friends. We hope to see you there!

Popcorn Day at RBS

We are bringing back a former Principal’s Council-sponsored treat for our students—Popcorn Day.  Each quarter we will be providing freshly popped popcorn (from our own popcorn machine that was donated to our school several years ago).  Parent volunteers will pop the corn in the morning and deliver it to classrooms in time for the students to have it for snack that day (if they choose). Mrs. Ouellette and classroom teachers are working with parents of allergy students in order to accommodate the needs of those students and classes.  Our plan moving forward is to have Popcorn Day each quarter.  Teachers and/or I will communicate those dates to families.  Our first day will be on Thursday, March 19^th. 

Spring Class Pictures

On Wednesday, March 18^th, Geskus will at RBS to take class pictures, and families will be able to purchase a 5x7 print for $12.  20% of the proceeds will come back to the school.  Order envelopes were sent home with students this week.  Students will need to bring their picture envelope with them on Picture Day (March 18) if they are ordering.  

March Food Drive

RBS is working with the Bedford Food Pantry to help collect food items that are most needed by families.  Every other month we collect 1 food item.  For the month of March, that item is CANNED FRUIT.  If you are able, please bring in canned fruit until Friday, March 27^th.  We will have a box for donations in the office hallway outside of the library.  Thank you so much for supporting this very worthy cause, which supports Bedford families.
