RBS Winter Concert

We had a wonderful concert Wednesday evening featuring our 4th Grade Chorus as well as our Strings Program.  It was a fun and festive evening!  Thank you to Ms. Pennington for putting on such a wonderful event.  She meets with the students in 2 separate groups, so coordinating the final production with 70+ students was quite a feat!  Our Strings Program has certainly flourished over the past few years, in large part, due to Mrs. Bond’s talents and efforts!  Congratulations to all of our wonderful and talented students too!  Ms. Pennington was also able to drop off all of the toys collected for our Toys for Tots drive on Wednesday.  Thank you for your generous donations!  As you know, it means a lot to the children and families who receive them.

School Nurses

Our School Nurses are working around the clock to keep our schools safe and open.  When they call you, please respectfully engage with them.  The questions they are asking are required and part of their job.  Let’s make their work easier by engaging kindly in what we know are frustrating conversations.

Work for Absent Students

Currently, we have many students who are quarantining due to a family/household exposure as well as those who are quarantining because of a Covid diagnosis.  Given the amount of work and time it takes for our teachers to put together assignments, etc. for these students who need to be home for an extended period of time, the teachers need to prioritize this responsibility over putting together work for students who are traveling or missing school for some other reason.  In a typical year, this is not usually an issue.  I ask that you please understand this circumstance when working with your child’s teacher in getting work for reasons other than mandated quarantining.

Coat Drive

As we have in past years, Riddle Brook School is sponsoring a Coat Drive.  Items collected will be donated to needy families.  The drive runs from Monday, December 6th – Thursday, December 16th.  Items to be collected include: clean hats, mittens/gloves, scarves and coats for men, women, children and infants.  Boxes are located in the library hallway.

Covid Communication

Moving forward, the district will be expanding its communication of Covid cases. Instead of sending out a letter to only the class and/or bus involved, a notification will go home to all families when cases occur at school. In the letter, we will list the class(es) and bus(es) (if applicable) where the case(s) occurred. One letter may contain more than one case.

Toys for Tots at RBS

Ms. Pennington and the RBS Music Department will kick off our annual TOYS FOR TOTS collection starting next week. TOYS FOR TOTS is a well-known charity run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. We will collect toys between the dates of Monday, November 15th and Friday, December 10th. RBS students can deposit new, unwrapped toys in any of our 4 boxes, which are located outside of our music room and in the office hallway. Through our generosity, the holidays will be filled with happiness for children who need our help!

Food Drive – October 18 – November 19

This year more than ever, the Bedford Community Food Pantry is a valuable resource for those in our community who are facing hunger or food insecurity.  The Food Pantry is a 501(c)3 organization that is a well-coordinated effort between 5 area churches, local organizations, including the Bedford Lion's Club and the Boy Scouts, and individuals and families in Bedford.

They are always in need of THESE FOOD ITEMS, but any nonperishable food items are welcomed.  At RBS, we would like to make a concerted effort to collect these items for our food drive.  If you are able to make a donation, I know the Food Pantry would GREATLY appreciate it!  We will donate the food items just in time for Thanksgiving.

*Monetary donations are also welcomed in order to purchase food from the NH Food Bank (checks made out to Bedford Community Food Pantry).

If you haven’t already, please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher.  It’s so important to hear about your child’s progress as well as ask questions and share important information about your child with his/her teacher.

Morning Drop Off

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been quite a large back up in our drop off line each morning very close to 8:00 AM.  Please remember that if a student enters the classroom after 8:00 AM, they will be marked tardy.  *This is not the case for bus drop off.  Parent drop off typically grows during the winter months, so my best advice would be to arrive at school on the earlier side.  Drop off begins at 7:30 AM.

Food Drive – October 18 – November 19

Cold Weather Clothes

The cool fall mornings are upon us!  Please remind your children that they need to keep the chilly temperatures in mind when dressing for school in the morning.  Layers are always a good idea this time of year.

Bus Delays

As many of you have noticed, our bus company is experiencing a shortage of drivers and subs this year. As a result, some of our runs have been running 15 or so minutes behind on the days there is a shortage.  Once I’m informed of the delay in the morning, I have been sending a message (text and email) to families informing them of the delay.  I will continue to do that moving forward.  Students on those buses will not be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:00 AM.  I know it can be frustrating and put a wrench in your morning plans, but the bus company is doing their best to accommodate all of their routes.  Thank you for your patience!

Counselor’s Corner

Mrs. Blaine began her class lessons this month. She is focusing on feelings and emotions in each grade level.  Below, please find the books she is reading and associated activities:

Kindergarten and Grade 1The Color Monster by Anna Llenas.  She will be playing “Name that Emotion!” with the students. At the end of the lesson everybody will get a poster of emotion emojis to take home.

Grade 2A Little Scribble Spot by Diane Adler.  She will be teaching about the Zones of Regulation. Each student will create their own scribble spot and rainbow spot as they learn to sort and name their emotions. At the end of the lesson each 2nd grade student will get their own Spot of Emotions Poster to take home.

Grades 3 & 4The Way I Feel by Janan Cain. The third graders will review the Zones of Regulation. Mrs. Blaine will show the class cards with pictures of children on them. The class will work together to sort the cards into the correct zone. They will also have an opportunity to complete a “How Am I Feeling Zone Worksheet.” Every third grader will take home a Zones of Regulation poster.  The fourth graders will  watch a video called “Why Do We Lose Control of Our Emotions?”  They will learn about the parts of their brain that control  emotions. At the end of the lesson each student will take home a Brain Pictograph that highlights brain function.
