RBS Principal’s Notes
June 20, 2018

I want to wish everyone a happy, healthy and relaxing summer!  Best wishes to our 4th grade students who are moving up to McKelvie School, as well as those students who are moving over the summer.  You will be missed at RBS!

IN THE NEWS:
Move-Up Day
Students were able to visit their new teachers and classmates for a brief time this morning.  The children seemed excited to meet their teachers and some new friends!

Robyn McGilvary Award
Each year we present a 4th grade student with the Robyn McGilvary Award.  This is given to a student who has displayed Robyn’s character, warm-heartedness and humor.  The recipient receives $100 (This money was donated by family and friends in lieu of flowers when Robyn passed away in April 2011.), flowers donated and presented by Robyn’s husband, John, and his/her name on a plaque, which is hung outside of the office at Riddle Brook School.  This year’s winner is Luci Roberts.  Congratulations to Luci and her family!

Saying Goodbye to Some Great RBS Staff Members
This year, we are saying goodbye and thank you to some beloved RBS staff members who are leaving us after many years of dedication and service to our school and district.  Please join me in wishing a happy and well-deserved retirement to Kathy Effenberger (grade 2) and Kathy Parker (Enrichment).  Also leaving RBS for new adventures and opportunities are:  Tracey Gamache (grade 4), Detta Porat (grade 1 – moving to Memorial) and Sue Christensen (secretary – moving to Memorial).  We will miss you all!

Lost and Found
The lost and found bin is overflowing!  Over the summer we will be donating anything left behind.  To be safe, parents should plan to stop by the school to claim any lost articles of clothing by the end of this week.

REMINDERS:
Report Cards
As a reminder, student report cards are available online only in the PowerSchool Parent Access Portal.   To access your child's report card online, log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal and you will see a Report Cards icon in the left hand pane.  When you click on this icon your child's report card will appear on the screen.  You can scroll to see the entire report card and choose to print it, if you'd like.  If you’d like a printed report card, please print it prior to July 1st, as it will not be available after we do roll over (sometime in July).  Anytime you click on the Report Cards icon, the most recent report card will generate.  Quarter 4 report cards will be available to view on Wednesday, June 20th at 12:45 PM.

Riddle “Brook”
Over the past few weeks, K-4 students have been completing an Integrated K-4 project around the book, Only One You, by Linda Kranz.  In this book, a young fish named Adri is about to explore the ocean on his own.  His parents share stories and important lessons they have learned throughout their lives in hopes that these stories will help Adri along his journey.  Here at Riddle Brook School, we too encourage our students to “Find your own way,” and “There’s only one you in this great big world.  Make it a better place.”

Miss Ferns read the book to all students during their library special, while Mrs. Parker’s 4th grade GEMS students dug out a "brook" in the front garden between the main entrance and visitor parking.  Students then painted a rock with their own individual aquatic animal on it with Mrs. Read in the art room this week.  They have all come out so lovely... and different!

Please check out the finished "brook" this summer with your children.  It will be completed on Tuesday, June 19th.  When visiting, please leave all rocks on display for this permanent installation.

RBS Garden (A Message from Mrs. Parker)
Have you noticed the six raised garden beds growing behind our school?  We’ve been busy building them and planting them in the fenced-in space out back during the past month.  Hopefully, this summer we’ll have a variety of vegetables growing there.  So far, we’ve planted organic vegetables such as beans, carrots, corn, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, peas, potatoes, spinach, squash, and swiss chard.  As members of the Riddle Brook Community, we want you to know that you can come check out the garden and pick available veggies any time you are in the schoolyard this summer.  Enjoy!

UPCOMING EVENTS:
August 27th – Meet and Greet (K-4).  1:30-3:00 PM

RBS Principal’s Notes
June 15, 2018

As of now, the temperature on Monday is predicted to be 99°!  In preparation, I’ve asked teachers to pull their blinds before they leave today in order to keep rooms as cool as possible over the weekend.  Staff members will also be bringing in fans for their rooms.  We'll play afternoon recess by ear, but I imagine that some, if not all, will be indoors.  We plan to keep the day as low key (activity wise) as possible.

IN THE NEWS:
Senior Clap Out
We had our annual BHS Senior Clap Out on Wednesday afternoon for former RBS students.  It was a GREAT experience for everyone!  Please take a look HERE or on the RBS Facebook page for pictures.

A Message for Kindergarten Parents
After many years of successful implementation of the Reading Street reading program, starting next year we will be moving to the Reading Wonders program in kindergarten (same program as grades 1-4).  In order to make room for our new Reading Wonders materials, we are taking Reading Street materials out of our kindergarten classrooms.  If anyone is interested in having any kindergarten Reading Streets Materials for home use with their student these materials are available for you to have.  Simply let your child's teacher know and they will be sent home on the last day of school.
