Executive Functioning and Mindfulness Messages
Executive Functioning
Bosses have a lot to remember.  Here is one more remembering tool or strategy.  Making quick cartoons or drawing a picture can help you remember key information.  Your pictures don’t have to be perfect!  Do you remember in second grade drawing the life cycle of the butterfly?
Mindfulness
Mindfulness helps you to use your mind’s eye to see colors while breathing.
Close your eyes.  Imagine colors while focusing on your breath.  Inhale a deep green, and exhale a smoky gray or blue.  Try to imagine the colors as swirling and alive with each inhale.  If you are calming down from an angry moment, the color red is a great color to exhale, so you can get back in the green zone.

REMINDERS:
Bedford Food Pantry – Items Needed for Children
Food Insecurity is a growing concern across the nation and right here in our own backyard.  Nearly 350 adults and children in Bedford qualify for food stamps and more than 167 families in Bedford meet the income standards for the government’s free school lunch program.

In light of these numbers, the Bedford Food Pantry has started a new program, School Lunch Plus, to provide students in Bedford who face food insecurity two lunches each weekend (with complete privacy/anonymity).  In order to provide two lunches for each student in need, the Food Pantry is looking for donations of these specific items.

If you are able to donate these items (these are ongoing donations), please bring them by the Bedford Food Pantry at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, 4 Church Road, Bedford, NH.

Parents/guardians, please contact the school guidance counselor or school nurse if you would like your child to participate in this program.

Book Fair
The RBS Book Fair team will be recruiting volunteers for setup and sales from March 24-April 7.   Sign ups will be available after February break.

The committee is also searching for a new decorating lead for next year.   The theme is provided by Scholastic for each fair as well as decorating supplies and suggestions, clip art, etc.   We are looking for someone with a little creativity to pull the room together!  Please contact Lauren Wilensky with questions or interest.   lswilensky@gmail.com

Morning Traffic
A reminder from both RBS and the Bedford Police Department – Please remember to follow the appropriate traffic rules both on New Boston Road and within our campus.
  1. When making a right hand turn into our campus, you should be in the turn lane, otherwise you may cause an accident by cutting off those cars that are using the turn lane.  The Bedford PD has noted an issue with this and will be monitoring it from time to time.
  2. Please remember to follow the drop off protocol within our campus.
    1. Please do not get out of your car to get your child out.
    2. Please make sure your child is exiting the car on the sidewalk side.
    3. Please do not pass (or honk at) the car in front of you.
    4. Please be respectful and courteous to other drivers and staff members.
I understand that people have places to get to, but for safety sake, it is so important to slow down and follow the rules.  Thank you!

Executive Functioning and Mindfulness Messages
Executive Functioning
Bosses have a lot to remember.  Here is another remembering tool or strategy.  Use “crazy phrases”:  Make up a wacky sentence to help you remember names, places or events in a specific order.  Here’s one:  “Never eat soggy waffles.” will help you remember the points on a compass - north east, south, west.
Mindfulness
Help yourself to be mindful, attentive and calm by focusing on your breathing.
Place one hand close to your nose (not touching) and one hand on your belly.  As you breathe in, feel your belly expand.  As you exhale, feel the warm air hit your hand.  Focus on this breath for one minute.  It's OK when thoughts sometimes come into the mind uninvited.  Try to exhale that thought away.

Executive Functioning and Mindfulness Messages
Executive Functioning
Bosses have a lot to remember, especially when you are trying to be the Boss of yourself and your learning.  REMEMBERING is cementing information into your brain and making it stick.  Let’s talk about some remembering tools and strategies.  The most important tools include active practice:  read, say, do 3 to 5 times.  For example, when you have new spelling words, say each word aloud and spell it aloud while writing it 3 to 5 times.  This should help you to remember it.  Also, complete your homework and complete your morning work.  When you do these things consistently, your brain actually makes faster connections and you will get smarter “brain wrinkles.”
Mindfulness
Mindfulness takes practice.
Just like anything you want to learn, Mindfulness takes practice.  Try this Mindfulness exercise for one minute at the beginning of every day.  Sit tall in a chair with quiet hands in your lap.  Have your eyes look at one point in the room.  Have your ears be listening.  Your mouth should be quiet.  Can you keep your whole body calm; not moving, wiggling, or talking for one minute?  If you practice every day, you will be able to have a mindful body.
